Gerald P. Casey
October 20, 1915-March 23, 2006
DALTON -- Gerald P. Casey, 90, of 71 Oak St. Extension died yesterday morning at home.
Born in Worcester on Oct. 20, 1915, son of the late John J. and Catherine Broderick Casey, he attended schools there and was a 1935 graduate of St. Peter's High School. He continued his education, after winning a football scholarship, at Fort Union Military School in Virginia.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served as a staff sergeant for the 8th Air Force based in England during World War II. Following his wartime service, he came to Pittsfield and was employed as a rating and routing clerk for the railroad, and later for General Electric. He then went to work at Byron Weston Paper Co. as a supervisor, retiring with 34 years of service.
He was a former executive director of the Dalton Housing Authority, a position he held for 50 years.
Mr. Casey was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Pittsfield and of St. Agnes' Church in Dalton and a former Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus in Dalton.
His wife, the former Muriel Foley, whom he married May 31, 1941, died Dec. 18, 1993. He leaves a son, Michael T. Casey of Williamstown; four daughters, M. Paula Kendall of Orlando, Fla., Katherine E. Hinkell of Pittsfield, Maureen Casey Lester and Deborah A. Casey of Dalton; 13 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, John Walter Casey, who died at birth, and a grandson, Casey M. Kendall, who died Nov. 6, 1994.
FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Gerald P. Casey, who died Thursday, March 23, 2006, will be held Saturday at 9 a.m. at St. Agnes' Church, celebrated by the Rev. Christopher A. Malatesta, pastor. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery. There are no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Mr. Casey may be made to the Casey M. Kendall Memorial Scholarship Fund, United Cerebral Palsy, or to HospiceCare in The Berkshires, all in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 890 East Main St., Dalton, MA 01226. Mr. Casey leaves his grandchildren, Karen Casey, Moria Casey, Patricia Riley, Margaret O'Neill, Shawn Kendall, Jay Kendall, John Hinkell, Erin Smith, Alyssa Hinkell, Daniel Lester, Colleen Lester and Michaela Casey, and great-grandchildren Katie Hinkell, Joseph Hinkell, Jonathan McNeil, Lily Marie Smith, Casey Bachli, Olivia Bachli, Aiden McNevit, Cassandra Riley, Jack Edward Riley, Casey Kendall, Dalton Kendall, Asia Kendall, Tyler Cummings and Michael O'Neill, and his longtime friend, Carolyn Gaudette.
